The work of Whitney Johnson, also known as Matchess, is described by the artist as “a material history of reproduction.” From an outside perspective, it feels like sequences of hypnotic, engaging forms—a fusion of musical concepts and materials used to evoke transcendence.
Hav challenges linear narratives and language, blending the values and details of various times, intentions, and places into music. The album's creation began in 2021 while Whitney was researching the Cult of Hermaphroditus and visiting the cult's historical sites in Cyprus and Greece. She collected materials during this journey, including VHS footage, 35mm photos, and field recordings, with the cover image of Hav coming from this trip.
