On their third album for Bongo Joe Records, Malawi’s Madalitso Band open new doors. Where their previous albums channelled the energy of their raw, street-busking spirit, Ma Gitala sees them embrace the possibilities of the studio without losing their unmistakable style. The duo, Yobu and Yosefe, weave handmade babatone and guitar sounds with mesmerising vocal harmonies and playful percussion, blending kwela, gospel, banjo music and African folk into a hypnotic and joy-filled acoustic trance. Adding subtle new textures and guest appearances from family and friends, Ma Gitala is an exploration of their roots through a more intimate lens – full of spontaneity, creativity and soul. It’s the sound of two friends turning memories into melody and stage into playground.
