Description
Idles' fifth album, Tangk, marks a bold departure from their early raw punk roots, embracing a more nuanced and expansive sound. Starting with an arpeggiating piano and ending with a subtle sax solo, Tangk explores new musical territories while retaining the band's core intensity. The album features collaborations with LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy and Nancy Whang on the infectious track "Dancer," highlighting the pleasure of bodies moving in sync.
The slow-burning "Grace" channels the pensive synth reverberations reminiscent of LCD's "Someone Great," showcasing the band's evolving sonic palette. Co-produced by Nigel Godrich, known for his work with Radiohead, Tangk incorporates drones, blurry whines, and instrumental ad-libs, adding layers of depth and texture. Frontman Joe Talbot shifts from his usual seething delivery to more soulful and delicate vocals, exemplified in the waltzing piano track "A Gospel."
Despite the shift in style, Idles maintain their signature ferocity in tracks like "Hall & Oates" and "Gift Horse," the latter brimming with the band's explosive energy. Talbot's lyrics reflect a profound journey of love, empathy, and gratitude, influenced by his personal experiences and loss. Songs such as "Roy" showcase Idles' ability to build slow-burning tension, culminating in a powerful, soul-infused climax.
Tangk stands as a testament to Idles' growth, capturing their transition from punk rabble-rousers to a band capable of profound emotional resonance and sonic ambition. This album is not just a collection of love songs but a manifesto of the band's evolution and their commitment to empathy and grace.
