Spring In Stockholm: Live In Sweden, 1959 Gerry Mulligan

Gerry Mulligan joins the Night Lights band during their scorching 1959 European tour, featuring a superb quartet lineup: Gerry Mulligan on baritone sax and piano, Art Farmer on trumpet, Bill Crow on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums.

The band was at the peak of its powers, and these remarkable recordings confirm Mulligan’s group as one of the hottest jazz outfits of the time.

Working with the Swedish National Radio Archives and the Gerry Mulligan Estate, the New Land label has uncovered the original master tapes from the Sveriges Radio vault. Kevin Gray has expertly mastered and cut the recordings, delivering incredible sonic depth for these previously unreleased tracks.

The newly created cover art by Two To Tango, frequent New Land collaborators, offers a striking modernist design, complemented by a newly designed sleeve featuring rare tour photography and liner notes from original bassist Bill Crow.

The LP, pressed at Pallas and packaged in reverse-board sleeves on 180g vinyl, is an essential addition to any jazz collection.

Baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan was a true jazz icon, a leading figure in the West Coast scene from the 1950s until his passing in 1996. He was voted the top musician for his instrument by DownBeat magazine for 42 consecutive years. As a key player of his time, Mulligan helped shape the sound of jazz, from his work with the Birth of the Cool era Miles Davis lineup to forming a piano-less quartet with Chet Baker, always at the forefront of America’s defining art form.
