Following the shelving of KMD’s Bl_ck B_st_rds in 1994 and the tragic loss of his brother and groupmate Subroc, Zev Love X transformed into the enigmatic MF Doom. His 1999 debut album, Operation: Doomsday, remains a cornerstone of hip-hop—a 19-track masterpiece of gritty, self-produced beats and near-mythical lyricism.

Tracks like “Rhymes Like Dimes” showcase Doom’s surreal wordplay and biting social commentary, while collaborations with Monster Island Czars on “Who You Think I Am?” and Kurious Jorge on “?” expand the album’s off-kilter brilliance. Doom’s avant-garde style peaks with “Tick, Tick...,” where he and MF Grimm navigate a constantly warping rhythm.
