Steve Queralt, best known for his work as the bassist in Ride, takes centre stage with Swallow – a debut solo LP five years in the making. Crafted between Ride albums and shaped by moments of quiet uncertainty, Swallow is a haunting blend of shimmering ambient textures, downtempo electronics, and sparse vocals that amplify its emotional undercurrent.
Drawing comparisons to early M83, Sigur Rós, and Boards of Canada, Swallow is heavy on mood and melody. Guest vocals from Sonic Cathedral labelmate Emma Anderson (Lush, Sing-Sing) and Verity Susman (Electrelane, MEMORIALS) elevate the album’s highlights – notably the gorgeous “Lonely Town,” “Swiss Air,” and the politically-charged closer “Motor Boats,” which samples Julie Sheldon’s searing poem The Same Boat.
Queralt’s production is lush and cinematic, evoking sci-fi dystopias and introspective nights alike – a bold and beautifully understated solo debut.
