Why We Love It

Rumours is proof that the best break-up record ever made can also be the best-selling one. Fleetwood Mac wrote and recorded this while three of its five members were falling apart romantically in real time, and somehow turned that chaos into gleaming, endlessly hooky pop-rock. Every song is a small confession aimed at someone else in the room, but you'd never guess the turmoil behind it from how effortless it all sounds. Dreams, Go Your Own Way and The Chain are the obvious highlights, but there isn't a weak moment across the whole record. Drama has rarely sounded this good.

Sam's Note

Everyone owns this one already, but it's worth remembering why: there isn't a single filler track on it.

Why This Album Matters

Released in February 1977 on Warner Bros., Rumours was recorded amid simultaneous breakups within the band — Christine and John McVie's marriage ending, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham splitting up — all while they wrote and performed songs directly about each other. It went on to sell over forty million copies worldwide, won Album of the Year at the 1978 Grammys, and remains one of the best-selling albums in history, regularly cited as a high-water mark for both studio pop-rock craftsmanship and confessional songwriting.

Fleetwood Mac began in London in 1967 as a British blues band before transforming into one of the biggest pop-rock acts of the 1970s following the arrival of Americans Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Built around the songwriting of Buckingham, Nicks and Christine McVie, and the rhythm section of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, the band weathered constant internal turmoil while producing some of the era's most enduring and widely loved records.

Five people falling apart in real time, turned into gleaming, endlessly hooky pop-rock.
