Why We Love It

v2.0 is what happens when a jazz piano trio starts thinking like electronic producers. GoGo Penguin build these tracks from tight, interlocking grooves and glitchy, almost programmed-sounding rhythms, but every note is played live on piano, bass and drums. It's urgent and physical in a way most modern jazz isn't, closer in spirit to Aphex Twin or Boards of Canada than to a traditional trio record, and it earned them a Mercury Prize nomination for good reason. Murmuration opens the record with real intent, and it never really lets up from there.

Sam's Note

If you think you don't like jazz, start here. It doesn't feel like jazz in the way people expect, and that's exactly the point.

Why This Album Matters

Released in March 2014 on Manchester's Gondwana Records, v2.0 was GoGo Penguin's second album and the first with the settled lineup of Chris Illingworth, Nick Blacka and Rob Turner. Its fusion of acoustic jazz trio instrumentation with the rhythmic sensibility of electronic and dance music helped define Gondwana's identity as a label, and its Mercury Prize nomination brought a much wider audience to a strand of modern British jazz that refuses to sound like a museum piece.

GoGo Penguin are a Manchester piano trio who arrived at their sound from an unusual angle, drawing as much from electronic music, hip-hop and post-rock as from jazz tradition. Signed to Matthew Halsall's Gondwana Records early in their career, they've become one of the label's flagship acts and one of the most distinctive voices in the current wave of British jazz reaching listeners well beyond the genre's usual audience.

A jazz piano trio thinking like electronic producers, played entirely live.
