Manchester, 1979. Four musicians who'd barely learned their instruments made a record that still sounds like nothing else. Unknown Pleasures is the only Joy Division album released while Ian Curtis was alive, and it set the blueprint for post-punk almost by accident — producer Martin Hannett stripped the band's live sound back to something spacious, cold and strange, and Curtis's flat, haunted vocal did the rest.
Opener "Disorder" still hits like nothing else from the era, and "She's Lost Control" remains one of the coldest, most compelling things ever pressed to vinyl. Essential listening for anyone serious about where guitar music went once punk had burned itself out.
