Ambient 1: Music for Airports is the record that gave ambient music its name. Four pieces — simply titled 1/1, 2/1, 1/2 and 2/2 — built from tape loops of differing lengths left to drift in and out of sync with each other, designed to be played on a loop rather than listened to start to finish. Eno conceived it after a frustrating wait at Cologne Bonn Airport, wanting something to replace the anxious blandness of piped-in muzak with music that could hold your attention or dissolve into the background, depending on what you brought to it.
Released in February 1979, it was met with confusion by some critics and has since been named the greatest ambient album ever made by Pitchfork. This is the vinyl reissue via UMC.
