A legendary Don Cherry concert finally receives its first authorised release.
Recorded on 5 March 1977 at Pease Auditorium in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Sunrise captures Don Cherry, Collin Walcott and Leon Thomas in their only documented performance together. The trio move through an immersive, hypnotic set, joined for part of the evening by Oregon members Ralph Towner, Paul McCandless and Glen Moore.
The concert comes from a fertile point in Cherry’s late-1970s journey, as his “Organic Music” philosophy folded Eastern and African traditions into a borderless spiritual jazz language. Switching between trumpet, West African doussn’gouni, bamboo flutes, percussion and vocals, Cherry builds a deeply resonant sound world alongside Walcott and Thomas’s unmistakable yodel-inflected voice. Recorded only a month after Walcott’s ECM album Grazing Dreams, the performance feels like a hypnotic forerunner to CODONA.
Long circulated among dedicated listeners, the full concert has been newly remastered and officially licensed by the Don Cherry Estate and producer James Quinlan. The deluxe gatefold edition reproduces Moki Cherry’s striking 1975 Mandala tapestry on its cover and includes new liner notes by Jason Weiss, preserving a unique night with remarkable intimacy.

Many of the records we sell are sourced to order from our trusted network of UK distributors, allowing us to offer thousands more titles than we could ever stock in-store. Please allow up to 7 working days for dispatch.
If you've pre-ordered a record, we'll always aim to dispatch it in time for release day so it arrives on, or as close to, the official release date as possible.
