Why We Love It

MM...Food is MF DOOM at his most playful and most technically dazzling, hiding some of his densest wordplay inside a loose concept album about food. The rhyme schemes on Beef Rapp and Rapp Snitch Knishes are genuinely dizzying, stacked with internal rhymes and cartoon-sample chops lifted from old Fantastic Four and Spider-Man episodes. It's funny, it's razor-sharp, and it rewards close listening in a way most rap records don't even attempt. Nobody else sounded quite like this, before or since.

Sam's Note

Put headphones on for this one — the rhyme schemes are so dense you'll catch new lines every time.

Why This Album Matters

Released in November 2004 on Rhymesayers, MM...Food is a loose concept album built around food-themed wordplay, with DOOM producing almost the entire record himself using samples pulled from vintage cartoons and TV shows. It's widely regarded as one of his very best albums and a high-water mark for technical, densely-rhymed underground hip-hop, and its influence can be heard across a generation of independent rappers who followed his lead on wordplay and sample-based production.

MF DOOM, born Daniel Dumile, was a British-American rapper and producer known for performing behind a metal mask inspired by Marvel's Doctor Doom. After tragedy struck his early group KMD, he reinvented himself as a masked villain character and became one of underground hip-hop's most acclaimed and influential figures, celebrated for his intricate rhyme schemes and offbeat, sample-heavy production across a run of classic albums.

Nobody else sounded quite like this, before or since.
