Nick Drake's third and final studio album, "Pink Moon," unveils a hauntingly intimate portrait of a troubled soul. Recorded in solitude, Drake's solo sessions reveal raw emotions akin to the starkness of Robert Johnson or Charley Patton. Each song, stripped down to its essence, resonates with a simplicity that is both chilling and captivating.

"Pink Moon" marks the culmination of Drake's introspective journey, where his lyrics and melodies, pared to their barest form, achieve profound immediacy. The album, predominantly featuring just Drake's guitar and voice, with a sparse piano on one track, eschews elaborate arrangements to highlight the raw beauty of his compositions.

Drake's dispatches from his private hell are simultaneously terrifying and beautiful, encapsulating his inner turmoil with a poignant clarity. Despite its starkness, "Pink Moon" shines as a testament to Drake's artistic depth and vision. It stands as a somber yet magnificent swansong, influencing generations of songwriters who would follow in his footsteps, drawn to his bleak yet mesmerizing musical landscapes.

Why We Love It

Pink Moon is just Nick Drake, his guitar, and a single overdubbed piano part on the title track — nothing else. Recorded across two late-night sessions in London, it's stark, brief and completely unadorned, a stripped-back retreat from the string arrangements of his earlier records. There's real intimacy in that starkness; it feels like being let into a room very few people were ever allowed into. Barely half an hour long, it says everything it needs to and then simply stops, which is part of why it's stayed so powerful.

Sam's Note

Play this one alone, with nothing else going on. It's short, but it needs your full attention.

Why This Album Matters

Released in February 1972 on Island Records, Pink Moon was recorded in just two overnight sessions with no backing band, a stark contrast to the orchestrated folk of Drake's earlier albums. It sold poorly during his lifetime, and Drake died less than two years after its release; only in the decades since has it come to be recognised as a landmark of stripped-back, intimate singer-songwriter music, and Drake as one of the most quietly influential folk artists of his generation.

Nick Drake was an English singer-songwriter who released just three albums before his death in 1974 at the age of 26. Shy to the point of barely performing live, he received little recognition during his lifetime, but his intricate guitar playing and unguarded, melancholy songwriting have since made him one of the most revered and widely covered folk artists of the twentieth century.

Being let into a room very few people were ever allowed into.
