Recorded in a single session on December 9th, 1964, with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums, A Love Supreme is Coltrane's account of a spiritual re-dedication he underwent seven years earlier, after getting clean. It's structured as a four-part suite — Acknowledgement, Resolution, Pursuance, Psalm — and the shift across those four parts, from the searching four-note bassline that opens the record to Coltrane's saxophone tracing the syllables of a devotional poem word for word on "Psalm," is something you feel more than follow.
Released on Impulse! in January 1965, it became the record most credited with pulling jazz toward explicit spirituality, a lineage that runs directly through Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane. This is the 1995 Impulse! vinyl reissue, remastered by Erick Labson from the original tapes, pressed as a single 180g LP in a gatefold sleeve.
