Why We Love It

Grace is one of those rare records where the voice alone justifies the whole thing. Jeff Buckley moves from a whisper to a full-throated wail within a single line, often within a single word, and somehow it never once feels showy. His cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah became so definitive that most people now think of it as his song, but the originals here — the title track, Last Goodbye, So Real — are just as extraordinary. It's the only album he completed before his death in 1997, which makes its beauty feel almost unbearably poignant, but on its own terms it's simply one of the great vocal performances in rock history.

Sam's Note

Yes, everyone knows Hallelujah. Stay for Lover, You Should've Come Over — it might be even better.

Why This Album Matters

Released in August 1994 on Columbia and recorded at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, Grace was the only studio album Jeff Buckley completed before his death by drowning in 1997. It sold modestly on release and received mixed reviews at the time, but its critical reputation has grown enormously since, championed by artists including David Bowie, who named it the single greatest album ever made, and Jimmy Page. Buckley's version of Hallelujah in particular has become one of the most widely covered and referenced vocal performances in modern music.

Jeff Buckley was an American singer-songwriter and the son of musician Tim Buckley, though the two barely knew each other. He built a following through intimate performances at New York's Sin-é cafe before recording Grace, his only studio album, and drowned in the Wolf River in Memphis in 1997 while working on its follow-up. Despite his tragically small recorded output, his vocal range and emotional intensity have made him one of the most revered and influential singers in modern rock.

A whisper to a full-throated wail within a single word, and never once showy.
